If you need a fat, thick, controlled fuzz for solo work — the kind that stays warm and articulate rather than splatty or scooped — these plugins are the closest match on the device. Fuzz Face FM is our pick, with Fuzz Face JH-2 a close second.

Our pick: Fuzz Face FM

Fuzz Face FM is a transistor-pair Fuzz Face simulation with the Fuller Mods — extra INPUT and DRIVE controls that let you clean up the distortion and dial in subtle shades of softer drive. Crank the FUZZ for a full-on roar, or back it off for a gritty overdrive that cleans up when you roll back your guitar volume. A mid-present sound means it's ready to cut through the mix.

This is the rare kind of plugin where chords remain articulate, even at high gains.

Fuzz Face JH-2 uses the same transistor-pair engine as FM, but trades the input gain stage and controls for extra saturation.

What you give up: Less flexibility in shaping the front-end saturation. A/B it against the FM to see which voicing suits your rig.

Also considered

GxKnightFuzz uses asymmetric clipping (separate lookup tables for positive and negative halves), which generates strong even harmonics — the right harmonic signature for a fat fuzz. It's a sampled-waveshaper approach rather than a full transistor circuit sim, so to our ears it sounds less "vintage germanium" and more "modern asymmetric fuzz." Points off for only INPUT + VOLUME controls.

GxFz1s is a Maestro FZ-1S model with symmetric clipping (more odd harmonics, buzzier) and mild bias-gating behaviour. It's a credible fat solo voice but the FZ-1S is mid-forward and harder than the warm controlled saturation we're after; the gating can lean toward splat at extreme settings.

Big Muff is the highest-quality circuit simulation of the set — full SPICE-style component modelling with oversampling and a true diode clipper. But it's a Big Muff: symmetric diode clipping (odd harmonics), scooped-mid tone stack, and violin-like sustain. That's the opposite of the fat, mid-present character we want. Use it when you want Gilmour/Smokey sustain.

Muff is only the Big Muff tone stack — a filter, not a fuzz. No clipping stage at all. Useless on its own for this use case.

Freakclip is a cheap waveshaper with a one-sample feedback delay and symmetric hard clipping. To our ears it sounds buzzy and static, with a weird resonant edge rather than fat warmth. Furthest from the vintage germanium sound.
